*CLOSED* double giveaway from alphabetty monster and make more friends

today we are celebrating handmade by hosting a giveaway from two adorable new shops on etsy.

check out our first giveaway from alphabetty monsters. i absolutely fell in love with this shop and was so excited when deann agreed to sponsor a giveaway. i plan on getting river's name done to hang up in his room when we start decorating. these little works of art of fun, colorful, crazy, and modern. how awesome would it be to win your own kid's name in alphabetty monster art, in a color scheme to match his or her room?

our second giveaway comes from holly from make more friends. her owls are made from cotton prints and flannel. they are super soft and would make a great baby gift, and would look totally cute in a nursery! i know this little owl pillow would look adorable sitting on the corner of my couch, or at the head of river's bed. (these two are my absolute favorites!) custom owls are available too, with a word or name embroidered on the belly, and if you see an owl you love that has already been sold, just let holly know and she will re-create it for you! she is also offering a 15% discount to leaves of my tree readers, with the coupon code LEAVESOFMYTREE. thanks holly! :)

that night mom went berserk over spilled coffee

i have this resolution that i should have started a long time ago, that i forgot to include in my list of resolutions, because it's more of a i-need-to-get-this-done-no-matter-what-month-it-is resolution, rather than a new year's resolution.

it involves my tongue. i swear my tongue is my greatest fault, my greatest sin, my greatest character flaw, whatever you want to call it. maybe not to strangers, oh sure, we always treat people we don't know the kindest, but with my family i can be as wild and unbridled as anything. i have the worst patience you can imagine, and i say things i don't mean. i also yell. i'm a yeller. john's very calm and patient in arguments, and i'm mean and i yell. plus, i not only yell, but i complain. about everything. sometimes i can't even stand to be around me, i complain so much. so my resolution is to watch my tongue. no saying mean things, no yelling, no complaining.

i never wanted to be a yelling mom, but i am ashamed to say i've failed time and time again, especially lately now that my sweet, innocent baby has turned into an energetic, mischievous toddler. river has surprised other moms, even those with multiple children, with his ability to scope out a no-no and get into every little thing in reach. "oh, he really does get into everything." yes, he does. and he is an excellent climber, which takes his destroy-power to another level. literally.

so, this morning i woke up in a horrible mood. i've had a lot of problems with my eyes the past few years and this morning i woke up with a red, swollen, gunky left eyeball, with no other symptoms, and for apparently, no reason that i am aware of. so i was in a bad mood pretty much immediately. these days, i connect everything to money, because there is so little, and it's really easy to complain about, so right off the bat i was playing the blame game and saying things like, "well, if we had the MONEY, i'd go see a freaking DOCTOR." (even though i probably wouldn't see a doctor even if we did have the money.)

because i was already on a roll with the complaining, i decided to complain some more. my feet were cold, but we don't have enough MONEY to run the HEATER. i want to put some flowers in a vase on the shelf but we don't have the MONEY to BUY ANY. and so on and so forth. and in the middle of my complaining, river was being his lately-mischievous self. chasing the dog. turning the television on and off. climbing onto the computer desk. getting into the trash in the bathroom. then decided he wanted my bowl of cereal for himself and spilled nearly the entire contents on the floor. ("if we had the MONEY to buy a freaking TABLE that wouldn't have HAPPENED.")

luckily, my friend kimberly came to my rescue, and took river to her house for a few hours, while i enjoyed checking my email, reading a book, and eating lunch, all in peace and without a toddler crawling on my face. of course, once i picked him up and we returned home, i realized getting rid of my child for a few hours doesn't mean i've gotten rid of his no-no scoping abilities, too. i decided to curl up on the couch with my book and a cup of coffee and try to nurse him to sleep. that wasn't much more pleasant, and he wasn't really interested in sleeping.

"river, please don't kick my book. mommy is trying to read. i can't read if you kick my book. sweetie, please sit still. you cannot stand up and keep nursing. i promise it doesn't work that way. if you want to go play, you have to stop nursing first. river, please don't bite. that really hurts mommy. river, no, i don't want to kiss your foot. it's a really cute foot, and normally i don't mind kissing it, but right now it's also a very dirty foot. so please don't stick it in my face. river, PLEASE stop sticking your finger in my nose. keep your hands to yourself."

frustrated, i finally put him down and left the room for a second to get a basket of toys. when i returned, there he was, standing on his tip-toes, reaching for my cup of coffee on the end table, which was in the same place my bowl of cereal had been this morning. i saw what was coming, and i cracked. i had really had enough today and it all came out in that instant, as the coffee spilled to the floor in slow-mo.

RIVER! RIVER, NO! PUT IT DOWN, PUT. IT. DOWN! RIIIVVERRRRRRR!

coffee was on the floor, on the rug, on the couch, on him. then, at that moment, i definitely lost all hope of winning best mom of the year award (if there was any chance to begin with). "look what you did! it's everywhere! mommy said NO and you didn't listen! you didn't listen! you're not a good listener! this is a no-no! that is not nice! why did you do that!" i yelled. no seriously, the dog was cowering in the hallway, in the dark. river just stood there, his face changing from a smirk to a sad little expression. i picked him up and plopped him in the playpen (which he had learned to climb out of, this afternoon). he started crying. as a mom, you really do learn the difference between your baby's cries -- hunger, frustration, a dirty diaper. this one... this one was hurt feelings. very hurt feelings.

sigh. as i'm typing this my cheeks are hot and i want to run to his room and kiss his soft, sleeping lips.

he cried and cried, and i continued to complain while i sopped up the coffee and talk about how other kids were so well-behaved and how i couldn't even get mine to understand leaving certain things alone. he knows he's not supposed to do that. he knows and he does it anyway. and he smirks while he does it, which is totally cute, but totally annoying at the same time. i swear if he were any older it wouldn't be cute at all.

eventually we reconciled and i nursed him to sleep while i cried to john about what a bad parent i am. i told him if i yelled at river like that every day he would have some serious psychological issues, and i didn't want to be a crazy mom who yells and gets angry because her one year old spilled coffee everywhere. after i laid him down i stared at him sleeping like a little angel for a few minutes and told him i was sorry i yelled at him and that it's okay that he disobeys sometimes because i know he doesn't mean to, he's just curious and wants to drink from a cup like mama. and see what happens when he chases the dog. and likes the way the TV looks when he turns it on and off, on and off. and climbing on the computer desk is fun, as is pushing all the keys on the computer and watching the screen turn blue.

i guess we all have moments like these, and i'm glad children are forgiving and super resilient, which gives us the chance to replay the same scene over. and over and over. and make different choices in how we react. as my friend diane told me, "the great thing about parenting is that each day (even each moment) can be a fresh start. all you have to do is decide to make a change."

*CLOSED* rockin green review and giveaway!

over a year into cloth diapers, and i am learning simple lessons i should have learned a long, long time ago. how many times have i read not to wash my diapers in regular detergent? how many times have i passed onto other people that they shouldn't wash their diapers in regular detergent? how many times have i heard that doing so can result in diaper rash, build-up and leaks?

in july i ran out of diaper detergent, and after promising myself never again to go with charlie's soap (sorry, charlie) i decided to try something cheaper and therefore, less risky. i went with tide free -- just over $3 for a big box! the results were beautiful at first. my diapers were super soft, they smelled great, and i felt for the first time that they were actually getting really clean. and then, they started leaking. bad. i would change river's diaper in the morning as soon as he woke up, and thirty minutes later it would be leaking from his big morning pee. very embarrassing when i took him the church nursery with wet jeans three sundays in a row. blech! i decided it couldn't be the detergent because i did the repelling test by splashing drips of water onto the prefolds to see if they soaked it up right away. they did, and so i figured a few of my covers were just getting old, and that i had dried them in the dryer too many times lately (which i had actually been doing, more on that in another post).

when i won a bag of rockin' green at a nurse-in (seriously, i won two things this year. i never win anything, i swear!) i was so excited to be able to start using this infamous detergent. i'd only heard great things, and couldn't wait to see for myself. i did a "rock the soak" and gradually, i noticed the diapers had stopped leaking. huh! who would have thought? still, i didn't attribute this to my detergent.

during our move in december we stayed at some friends' house, and i used the detergent they had on hand to wash my diapers, because i was too lazy to bring my rockin' green that had been boxed up and taken to our new house. within a week -- yes, just one short week -- my diapers started repelling like a mofo.

seriously?!? ugh.

if i didn't change river right away, he would soak right through his pants. i was mainly using my new gogreen diapers at the time, and thought it was a problem with them, but then he started leaking right through his bumgenius and happy heinies, which had never before given us any problems at all! i knew what i had to do.

i went to the new house, found my beloved rockin' green, and rocked the soak one more time. my poor diapers. they've been through so much. this time, because i knew what was causing the leakage, i immediately noticed a difference. i now have a new appreciation for rockin' green. all i can say is, thank you kim! (the awesome creator of this awesome detergent) you're my hero.

rockin' green is a safe, eco-friendly detergent with no nasties, like softeners, but not only does it get my diapers just as clean as any regular detergent, my diapers are also very soft, even when they've been line-dried. no, i'm serious. (when i used previously mentioned detergent, my diapers were always so crunchy coming off the line, they would practically stand up straight, and always smelled musty) i like that stripping diapers is easier with rockin' green. instead of washing the daipers four or five or six times in a row, like i've done in the past, i can just soak them for a couple of hours while i'm doing other things, and then continue with my regular wash routine. i also love that this detergent comes in soft rock and hard rock (as well as classic rock) -- specially formulated for soft and hard water.

so overall, this detergent works in every way i need want it to. no more musty smell, no more leaks, no more crunchy-off-the-line, is-it-really-clean prefolds, and hello, the easiest possible way to strip diapers. yes, please! i will purchase this detergent from now on.

because i just have a brand new bag of rockin green sitting neatly on river's bed next to a pile a freshly washed diapers. of course.
my nut wanted in on the picture.

yep, looks like i'm just another die-hard rockin' green fan. would you like to see for yourself, and become one, too? kim from rockin' green is giving away one bag with the scent of your choice to one lucky winner! i will choose one winner at random on saturday, january 22nd. here are ways to enter the giveaway:

dreaming of a white second christmas

we just returned from another wonderful visit to see my family in pittsburgh. by just i mean two days ago, but it is hard to get back into the swing of things after the drama of an all-day airport fiasco. (all plane trips with children are fiascos.) this plane experience was actually by far the best we've ever had, both to and from pittsburgh. river was happy, content, and for the first time he was absolutely intrigued by the take-off and landing. it was so cute to watch him watching the world get smaller. he stared out the window in wonder, shut and closed the window shade, read a little sky mall, and then decided to nurse and take a nap. he didn't throw fits, grab anyone's hair, throw his toys, or spit up all over the front of my shirt (he is well past the spitting up stage but i am grateful for this anyway, as he did spit up all over the front of my shirt during a plane trip about a year ago) the worst he did was stick his head in between the seats to offer non-stop "hi! hi! hi! hi!"s to the passengers sitting behind us in the last flight.

tampa has such a cool, modern airport! the kid's play area was much appreciated during our three-hour layover.

i've learned a couple things about flying with an infant or toddler. number one is, don't be embarrassed if they decide to make a terrible fuss before boarding. everyone will soon learn you have a BABY and they will not want to sit next to you, thus giving you an entire row to yourself. number two, in case anyone still hasn't gotten the point that you are toting along a sweet, precious, friendly loud, whining, jam-handed toddler with you (you want to really stress this point), let the baby sit on the seat next to you while people are still entering the plane and finding their seats. no one wants to sit next to a loud, whining, jam-handed toddler, and they will quickly move on to another empty row. number three, sit in the very back. you expect the front to be the best, but it's not, for a couple reasons. a) you're not gonna get the first row. you're just not. b) no one likes to sit in the back, so you have more of a chance of sitting by yourself and disturbing less people (aka, receiving less nasty looks) when your baby cries. and c) you're closer to the bathroom. fourth, if you're a nursing mom, sit by the window. i know it sucks to have to ask people to stand up so you can go to the restroom, but near the window, there's more privacy, and it's a lot less awkward. especially when the kid you're nursing is a toddler. the fifth and possibly most important thing i've learned about flying with a baby is to use pocket diapers. i used solely prefolds for almost a year, flying many times with them, and they will make a bad airplane experience even worse. on that teeny tiny changing table in that teeny tiny airplane bathroom, pockets are easier. way. easier.

in pittsburgh we had a second christmas. my mom made a delicious christmas dinner with all the trimmings, and afterward we opened presents. we did all sorts of christmassy things throughout the week, like sledding and building half a snowman and drinking hot chocolate with whipped cream and peppermint sprinkles. i have officially received my proper intake of christmas. i can put the tree away now.

my husband cut the turkey wearing my mom's pink pampered chef apron. had to get a picture.

mom. devine. seriously.

the week before we left for pittsburgh, the weather had been fair and there was no snow on the ground the night we arrived. however, the following morning it started snowing and it hardly stopped the entire time we were there! i was very happy. i really wanted river to experience his first snow (he saw snow when he was four months old, but uh, he didn't really care). since we're texans and we don't get snow in these here parts (i don't really talk like that) we don't own a mini snow-suit. so to make sure he was warm enough, we bundled him up in a pair of leggings, socks, PJ pants, jeans, a onesie, a long-sleeve shirt, a sweater, a hoodie, and a hat, and then we slipped two pairs of socks on his hands since we didn't have gloves.

at first he kept pointing and saying ew.

then he decided he loved it.

hooray for snow! this is the best one we got. my sister's hair always eats her face and my brother never jumps on time. it felt like an episode of the office.

he loved it so much, he didn't want to come in, even though his cheeks were bright red and his fingers had turned into little icicles. with tears in his eyes and snow stuck to his butt, he begged to go back out.

we stayed for just one week. a week goes by quickly, especially when it is in between long flights. i wish we could have stayed longer! it was fun and i miss my family already. it's so quiet here without five other people in the same house.. and cable tv. i could really go for some cable tv right now. today i kept making excuses and convinced myself that it was okay to just chill today instead of getting out of bed at seven and cleaning the house and unpacking more boxes. new year's resolutions? what new year's resolutions?

reading the upside down edition of oogy, a book my sister gave me for christmas.

next week, i promise...

homemade chocolate syrup

many store-bought chocolate syrup and cocoa drink mixes contain high-fructose corn syrup and dyes, and some aren't even made out of real chocolate. i had been hoping for an easy chocolate syrup for months (by hoping for, i mean i'd been really wanting one but hadn't actually looked for one), but one day, it just sort of fell in my lap! my mom emailed this recipe to me, and it is so delicious -- it tastes just like what you would buy at the store. in my head, i made gallons of this and poured it all into prettily decorated glass jars and gave them to our friends for christmas. in my head. maybe next year i'll be a little more organized and it will happen.

3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

mix the cocoa powder and the water in a saucepan. heat and stir to dissolve the cocoa. add the sugar, and stir to dissolve. boil for 3 minutes over medium heat. be careful not to let it get too hot and boil over! add the salt and the vanilla. let cool. pour into a clean glass jar, and store in the refrigerator. keeps for several months, [but trust me it will be gone before then]. yields two cups.

*CLOSED* review and giveaway: go green pocket diapers!

on january 16th, 2009 i wrote my first blog entry about my pregnancy with river. this blog has come a long way and reading past entries has made me so nostalgic. i wrote a lot then, really digging into my emotions about being pregnant (in short: loved my baby, couldn't stand pregnancy). i can't believe it's been two years. this month i will be hosting giveaways for the next four weekends, in celebration of my two year "blogiversary." i am so excited to be hosting my very first giveaway today! more so, i am excited about what is being given away. ;)

3 things i love about go green pocket diapers

1. affordable
i found gogreen pocket diapers while searching on amazon for inexpensive diapers. i was so surprised to find a pocket diaper for under ten dollars, which is half the price of your average pocket diaper and less than what you usually pay for a single cover. this price makes cloth diapering with pockets much more realistic for some families who can't afford to pay $20 a diaper. all go green diapers are one-size and will fit most babies from birth to potty training, which also means less diapers to purchase. right now river is about twenty-four pounds and still fits in the second row of snaps, so i think this diaper will be in use over here for a long time!

2. cuteness factor
i don't think i've ever seen a bigger selection of colors and prints for a single diaper brand! the colors are bright and cheery and the prints are fun and modern. there are zebra stripes, soccer balls, monkey prints (cleverly named monkey pee, monkey poo ... how cute is that?!), and much more!

3. quality
i was wary at first about using a $9 diaper, but i have been pleasantly surprised! they are well-made and after using them for three months, they are in the same great condition in which they came. the colors have not faded a bit, the snaps are still strong and secure, and none of the stitching has become loose.

i have used them in just about every situation -- at home, running errands, night-time, and even traveling in a plane. river is a pretty heavy wetter and i wouldn't leave him in them for more than a few hours, as we have had a couple of small leaks, but as long as we're doing normal diaper changes, they work great. in fact, i've used them overnight with a doubler and they didn't leak! i've combatted the small leaks we had by making sure the diaper is on the right fit (for us, snapped to the first row of snaps from the top for the medium rise) and tucking in the wings to make sure the wetness doesn't wick out. they held up very nicely on our recent plane trip to pittsburgh (thaaaank you gogreen! one less headache! ;)... and just as a pocket diaper is supposed to do, his bum is always dry while the insert is soaked. sometimes i have to double check to make sure he's really wet!

gogreen pocket diaper in lime.
gogreen pocket diaper in olive juice.

seriously, these diapers are worth a try, and how can you beat the price? when my gogreen diapers from leah arrived in the mail, i liked them so much that just a few days later i ordered five more. overall, i would definitely recommend these diapers; in fact, i already have: a friend who was interested in starting cloth diapering was asking me what i would suggest and i brought out my stash of gogreen diapers to show her. with the ease and the price and the quality combined, starting out with go green is a great way to build an affordable, reliable stash of diapers that will last throughout the entirety of the diaper years, all for under $200.

leah, the owner of gogreen pocket diapers, is just awesome! her customer service is great. she is quick to reply to questions and she is so personable. definitely check out her facebook page...  it's become its own little community of cloth diaper lovers!

so now the fun part. leah is giving away a pocket diaper to one lucky winner! for one entry in the giveaway, check out her website at gogreenpocketdiapers.com and leave a comment sharing your favorite diaper. below are other ways you can enter. you can do one, or you can do them all! leave a separate comment for each entry, and if you wish to be contacted via email if you win, leave your email address like this: yourname (at) mail (dot) com

resolution!

H A P P Y   2 0 1 1 !
glimpses from the past year.
how my teeny baby has grown into a little toddler.

last year i made some resolutions that i kept.
okay, i only kept one, but that's saying more than every other year.

my 2010 resolutions were as follows:
take a lot more pictures.
draw a face a week.
read thirty books.
start running.

and i completed the following:
took a lot more pictures.
started, but did not complete, one face.
read nine books.
ran twice.

i am so excited for this year in particular, for a few reasons:
1. we just moved to a house with one yard, one bedroom, one living room, and one washer more than what our apartment had.
2. now that i have said washer, i no longer need to take two-hour, thrice-weekly, $54-monthly trips to the laundromat.
3. i was able to complete one resolution, which means deep, deep, deep down, i have the ability to complete all. i will try much harder this year, and be just as unrealistic as last year, choosing all completely doable yet totally fail-able resolutions that only i could possibly break.

and my new year's resolutions for this year are below:
1. resist the urge to put anything sweet that is within thirty feet of me in my mouth. develop some serious self-control in this area, because it is seriously lacking. (in short, cut back on sugar.) part of this resolution is to give up soft drinks completely for the entirety of this year, with the exception of one very large dr. pepper on my birthday. because birthdays are special.
2. be generally more crafty. sew river some pants, shirts. draw at least once a month. decorate my new home.
3. be waa-haaaay more organized. i'm talking stepford wives organized. (i have to make it a really lofty goal so that my extreme failure is actually pretty impressive, for me anyway. i'll make a hot dinner every night and actually wash laundry when it needs to be done, and think myself a regular june cleaver, even though clean laundry will pile up on my bed and my hot dinners will be hot pockets.) a big part of this will be putting river on a routine. my poor hippie wild-child needs it.
4. read more. not a number, but a lot more than last year. read all the time. to myself, to river. just read.
